Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information HomeworkCollab collects, how it's used and stored, who can see it, and how you can have it deleted. HomeworkCollab is operated by HomeworkCollab (“we”, “us”). Questions or requests: contact@hwcollab.site.

1. Information we collect

Account information

• Email address, used to sign in and to send account emails such as sign-up confirmation.
• Password. It's stored in hashed form by our authentication provider; we never see it.
• Username, which other members of your classes can see.
• School, chosen from a list when you sign up. It's used to organize accounts and classes.
• Account type (student, teacher or admin) and whether an account has been suspended.
• Dates your account was created and last signed in, and when you accepted the Terms of Service.

Content you create

Classes, assignments, threads, chat messages, study groups and their topic boards, pinned notes and links, teacher posts and uploaded images, reactions, and any reports you submit. We also store which classes and study groups you belong to.

Technical information

Our hosting and database providers keep operational and security logs, which can include IP addresses, browser information and the time of requests. We also keep short records of failed class-code attempts and recent activity counts to prevent spam and abuse.

Cookies

We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in, set by our authentication provider. We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we don't show ads.

2. How we use information

• To run the service: sign you in, show your classes, and deliver messages and posts.
• To keep it safe: enforce access rules and rate limits, review reports, and suspend accounts that break the rules.
• To send account emails, such as sign-up confirmation.

We don't sell your information, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers.

3. Who can see your information

• Members of your classes can see your username and what you post in that class.
• Study groups: only group members can see a group's board, resources and chat.
• Teachers can see the member list, assignments and teacher posts in classes they belong to. Teachers cannot see student threads, thread messages or study groups.
• The site admin can see all classes and content, account email addresses, and reports, in order to moderate the service and respond to requests.
• Your email address and school are not shown to other students or teachers. A class may display the name of the school it belongs to.

4. Service providers

We use these companies to run HomeworkCollab. They process data on our behalf under their own terms:

• Supabase provides the database, sign-in, file storage, live updates and account emails. Our project is hosted in the U.S. West (Oregon) region. See Supabase's privacy policy.
• Vercel hosts the website. Pages are generated in the U.S. (Portland, Oregon) and delivered through Vercel's global network. See Vercel's privacy policy.

Links that members pin in study groups go to outside websites, which have their own privacy practices. We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of our users.

5. Where and how data is stored

Data is stored in the United States. Access is controlled by rules in the database itself, and uploaded images are private to the class they were posted in. No method of storing or transmitting data is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.

6. How long we keep it, and deleting your account

We keep your information while your account exists. Content you delete is removed from our database right away. You can permanently delete your account at any time from your Account page. Deleting your account:

• deletes your sign-in details, profile, class and study-group memberships, reactions, and every chat message you wrote;
• keeps assignments, threads, board cards, resources and posts you created for your classmates, shown as from a “deleted user” with no link to you;
• keeps reports you submitted, with your name removed.

Copies may remain in our providers' logs or backups for a limited time under their retention policies. To ask us to delete specific content, or for a copy of your information, contact contact@hwcollab.site.

7. Children

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. HomeworkCollab is not intended for children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we will delete it. Parents or guardians who believe this has happened can contact contact@hwcollab.site.

8. Your choices and rights

You can see your account details and delete your account on the Account page. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights, such as to access, correct or delete your personal information. To make a request, contact contact@hwcollab.site. We may need to confirm the request came from you.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date above. If a change significantly affects how we use your information, we'll let users know on the site before it takes effect.
